Improving our Understanding of Tropical Cyclone Genesis

چکیده

The primary question to be addressed is to understand the mesoscale and microphysical differences between cloud clusters that do develop into tropical cyclones and those that do not. Because the problem is not just an issue of the differences of structure within the cloud cluster itself, but is also an issue of how the cloud cluster interacts with the surrounding large-scale environment, a two-tiered approach is planned. In the first part of the research, the work of Ritchie 1995, Ritchie and Holland 1997, and Simpson et al. 1997 is extended via a series of simulations that incorporate the general structure of the western North Pacific environment but changes the mesoscale details of the cloud cluster under investigation. Through a series of high-resolution sensitivity simulations we can

Statistical modelling of tropical cyclone tracks: modelling cyclone lysis

We describe results from the fifth stage of a project to build a statistical model of tropical cyclone tracks. The previous stages considered genesis and the shape of tracks. We now consider in more detail how to represent the lysis (death) of tropical cyclones. Improving the lysis model turns out to bring a significant improvement to the track model overall.

Dynamics and Predictability of Tropical Cyclone Genesis, Structure and Intensity Change

A long-term goal of this research is to improve dynamical prediction of tropical cyclones using ensemble methods for making analyses and forecasts. A second goal is to use the information contained in ensemble analyses and forecasts to improve basic understanding of tropical cyclone dynamics. Finally, a third goal is to use ensemble-based sensitivity analysis to target observations for tropical...

Predicting Tropical Cyclone Genesis

The long-term goal of this project is to provide probabilistic genesis forecast guidance to operational forecasters and develop a genesis index to provide guidance for operational dynamical model prediction of tropical cyclone (TC) genesis. Once regions of high TC genesis probability are identified, a movable, multi-nested version of the COAMPS with resolution of roughly 3 km or less in the inn...

WMO/CAS/WWW SIXTH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON TROPICAL CYCLONES Topic 2.2: Internal influences on Tropical Cyclone formation Rapporteurs:

This report summarizes work completed since ITWC-V that contributes to an improved understanding of the internal influences on tropical cyclone (TC) formation. The report argues the importance of low-level vorticity enhancement during TC genesis due to convergence in convective regions, both on the individual convective element scale and on the system scale. It is argued that large-scale proces...
